5 Places in Ipoh You Must Be Go To Try Their Famous Food

1. Nam Heong White Coffee (Egg tarts and White coffee)

Nam Heong White Coffee is  the corner coffee shop located at the intersection of Jalan Bandar Timah and Persiaran Bijeh Timah.

  • Nam Heong's signature foamy kopi (coffee with milk). This is the famous Ipoh White Coffee. Ipoh White Coffee had slight bitterness was balanced with condensed milk and sugar. The cold version of this kopi with ice cubes added is also very popular.
  • For me, I love the smell of eggs from the freshly baked egg tarts. The soft eggy custard was held in a lightly browned pastry cup. The custard was mildly eggy and not overly sweet. The layered pastry cup was light and flaky, crumbling to gentle bites.

2.Restoran Nasi Ayam Pak Kong (Chicken Rice)

Restoran Nasi Ayam Pak Kong is popular mainly with locals even though it is located in the tourist belt in the downtown core. This restaurant has been around for over half a century.

  • I like their made of drumstick with rice and soup.
  • The fresh meat of drumstick was tender, smooth and juicy. The juices had subtle natural chicky sweetness. The skin was smoother and had more chicky flavour.

3.Yoon Kee Bean Sprouts Chicken (Regular Chicken Tauge with Rice)
  • The tauge was superbly crunchy, just the nice balance of sauces.

4.Cowan Street Ayam Tauge & Koitiau Restaurant (Tauge Chicken and Koitiau)
  • Cowan Street Ayam Tauge dunk their poached birds in cold water. The Cantonese way to lock in the juices and flavours in the tender flesh. They only hang a few ready to chop and serve ones at the front.
  • The kampung chicken was moist, slightly chewy and stringy though still tender (not soft). It is served bathed in a robustly savoury sauce with lots of aromatic oil. This sauce and shallot-sesame oil blend made the somewhat mild tasting chicken meat tyaste much better.
  • I love Cowan Street's kway teow soup. The round bodied, robustly savoury chicken soup was well balanced by the natural rice sweetness.
  • And then, there's the humble blanched beansprouts served in a watery pool of mildly savoury sauce and a light dusting of white pepper which turned out to be the hero dish of the evening.

5.Nasi Ganja Kedai Kopi Yong Suan (Nasi Kandar)
  • Nasi Kandar is not a very pretty dish- if food was judged by whether it was Instagrammable or not, nasi kandar will be one of the dishes that will be extinct.
  • At Yong Suan, the standard RM5 serving consists of a mound of white rice, casually splashed with two types of curry, a dollop of coconut chutnry, a piece of fried spiced chicken, half a salted egg yolk and some achar (crunchy pickled cucumber).
  • The large piece of chicken was marinated with a red seasoning and fried to a crisp outside. The crisp outside was savoury sweet with a bit of subtle spicy notes. Inside the chicken still had some moistness and a bit of natural fresh chicken sweetness. It was really tasty.
